Before we go any further let me introduce myself.
For many years my job was to provide extra support for children who were not making it in the regular class. I was always intrigued by why some children were able to learn well, while others, who were just as intelligent, seemed to find learning difficult. Why did bright children come across learning hurdles and lose confidence in their ability to learn? I knew that parents were as perplexed and frustrated as I was when their child would start to struggle with schoolwork.
My heart went out to the parents who were spending hours trying to help their child with homework, or who bought expensive ‘miracle programs’ to help their child succeed in school, and ended up frustrated and confused when nothing seemed to make a difference.
Later in my teaching career, I was fortunate enough to work with world renowned experts in how children learn. What I learned changed my understanding of teaching and learning forever.
Their message was simple … children struggle to learn when they don’t know how to learn, they meet learning hurdles when they do not have the basic learning skills that allow them to be good learners.
Suddenly everything made sense. Bright children meet learning hurdles because they don’t have the learning skills they need!
